Caribbean pilgrims celebrate first Cardinal from the Region

“I stand on the shoulders of two great men, Tony Pantin, the first Caribbean man to be Archbishop of Port of Spain to the South and Sam Carter, the first Caribbean man to be Archbishop of Kingston, Jamaica to the north. These were my mentors, they were great men,” Cardinal Felix said in an interview after becoming Cardinal with Trinity Television of Trinidad and Tobago. Cardinal Felix ‘cool’ ahead of Consistory

Cardinal Kelvin Felix was scheduled to leave his native Dominica on Monday (February 17) for Rome to attend the public consistory for the creation of new cardinals at which he – and 18 others appointed by Pope Francis – will receive the accoutrements of the office.

Raising of archbishop Felix to the college of Cardinal of first and signal honour for the AEC region

In an immediate reaction to the news that Emeritus Archbishop of Castries Kelvin Felix has been named a Cardinal by Pope Francis, Archbishop Patrick Pinder of Nassau, President of the Antilles Episcopal Conference has said, “This is a signal honour in that Archbishop Felix is the first from the AEC region to be raised to the College of Cardinal.  On behalf of all the bishops of the AEC I offer my heartfelt  congratulation, fraternal support and prayers for Cardinal Elect Kelvin Edward Felix. A new priest will soon be at work in the Archdiocese of Port of Spain, in Barataria to be specific. Ordained by Bishop Gabriel Malzaire on June 6 at the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in Newtown, Dominica, Fr Elton Letang CSsR will begin his priestly ministry at St Theresa’s in Malick, Barataria – where he served as Deacon for the last year.
