Serve rather than rule

Nuncio tells newly ordained bishop: Serve rather than rule

“..Listen to your people, Listen to your priests…listen, listen, listen!”Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Nicola Girasoli made the fervent plea to newly-ordained Bishop Kenneth Richards in a short speech during the Feb 8 Mass of Ordination.
“Sometimes we bishops, we forget to listen. Listen to their advice, try to be close to them, try to be not before them but among them, so that you may support them and you may be supported by them.”

Bishop Kenneth Richards - Bio and CV

Bishop Kenneth David Oswin Richards was born in Linstead, St Catherine, Jamaica on August 16th 1958.  A convert to the Catholic faith, he was baptised Anglican. He attended Catholic primary school where he was influence by Mass daily. He joined the Church while he was relatively young and was an altar server. The holy priesthood was never
considered. His life took a different course after two friends who were considering the priesthood, invited him to a series of vocations meetings. After graduation from St Catherine High School, on attending one such meeting where each aspirant met individually with the then director of vocations, Fr Charles Dufour, the young Kenneth Richards accepted an invitation to enter the St James Seminary, and his plans of becoming a lab technician or policeman were set aside.

In 1979, he entered St Michael Major Seminary, affiliated to the University of the West Indies, in Jamaica, where he obtained a Bachelor in Theology. He later furthered his studies at the Catholic University of America – Washington DC where he obtained a Licentiate in Moral Theology. He was ordained to the Diaconate on the 28th September 1984 and the priesthood on the 29th September 1985. Since his ordination as a priest, he has held many
positions in the Archdiocese of Kingston in Jamaica.

  • 1985-1989 Associate Pastor, Holy Cross Church
  • 1989-1995 Pastor, St Benedicts, African Martyrs, Christ the King
  • 1995-2003 Pastor of St Jude’s, St Patrick’s and Christ the Redeemer churches
  • 2004-2011 Administrator of Holy Trinity Cathedral
  • 2008-2011 Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Kingston

In June 2009 he was bestowed the title of Monsignor and more recently, appointed Bishop of St John’s-Basseterre on
November 19, 2011. Bishop-elect Richards has headed many school boards as well as the Diocesan Priests Association in Jamaica. He was also the Director of Vocations and youth Coordinator for the Archdiocese of Kingston. His influence was not limited to the Archdiocese as he served as Station Pastor – Mobile Reserve; Chairman, Board of Visitor Horizon Remand Centre; Chairman, Junior Centres; Council Member, Institute of Jamaica and Observer at Jamaica National Heritage Trust; Vice President, Jamaica Council of Churches and at various times Chairman of Ministers’ Fraternals.

Bishop Richards enjoys basketball and played in the National League with Mustangs (as a priest), St Catherine All Stars, Excelsior Eagles. Squash, motoring and listening to music are among his past times. His favourite things include celebrating the Eucharist, preaching the Gospel, counseling (especially marriage counseling) and working with people. Matthew
5:48 “Be holy…” has been his motivation as a priest.
