YEAR OF FAITH – YOUR CHANCE TO TURN BACK TO JESUS AND ENTER A DEEPER RELATION WITH HIM

1. What is the Year of Faith?

At certain times in the history of the Church, popes have called upon the faithful to dedicate themselves to deepening their understanding of a particular aspect of the faith. In 1967, Pope Paul VI announced a Year of Faith commemorating the 19th centenary of the martyrdom of Sts. Peter and Paul. The 1967 Year of Faith called upon the Church to recall the supreme act of witness by these two saints so that their martyrdom might inspire the present day Church to collectively and individually make a sincere profession of faith. The beginning of the Year of Faith coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, called by Blessed Pope John XXIII (11 October 1962),

The Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in its recommendations for the celebration of the Year has also indicated that “The Year of Faith will offer a special opportunity for all believers to deepen their knowledge of the primary documents of the Second Vatican Council”

In support of this the Bishops of the Antilles Episcopal Conference have arranged for the reprinting of this Outline of the 16 documents which are the fruit of the council.

This booklet is now available from the offices of the Antilles Episcopal Conference at a cost of US$4.00 per copy plus postage from Trinidad.

THE THIRD SESSION

14 September – 21 November 1964.

As a preamble to this Session, let me share with my readers that I was able to discover how many women actually attended this Session. There were 15 women, 8 were female religious and 7 were lay women. Perhaps at the First Session of Vatican III, we may have 30 women participating actively in the Council alongside the men folk. Now let us move to the Third Session of Vatican 11.

Liturgy and Revelation

By Fr. Malcolm Rodrigues SJ    Catholic Standard Guyana

One aspect of the debate which emerged
during the discussion on the Schema of the Liturgy was the need for greater authority in matters of the liturgy to be given to Episcopal Conferences.

This long and lively debate was not surprising as much research and publications around the world on matters of the liturgy in the church had been taking place for years before the council. So the long debate on the Schema of the Liturgy at this First Session was brought to an acceptable closure with a vote on the general principles set out in the draft, with a vast majority of the Fathers, (2,162 to 46) showing that they were ready to embark on significant liturgical reform.
