The island of Jamaica is situated in the Caribbean Sea, ninety miles south of Cuba. The total area of the island is 4,411 square miles. In 1967 the island was divided ecclesiastically
into the Archdiocese of Kingston and the Diocese of Montego Bay. In 1991 the Vicariate of Mandeville was established with territory taken from both the Archdiocese of Kingston and the Diocese of Montego Bay.Total population of Jamaica: 2,500,000. Population of Archdiocese in Jamaica: 1,119,856. Population of Cayman Islands: 28,000. Total Catholic population: 95,712Over 90% of the population is of African origin and most of the rest are a mixture of African with some other race. There are small percentages of Chinese, Indian (from India), Syrians, but these do not make up a total of more than 2% – 3%. There are probably less than 1% white European and North American.
